    SimpleNS Negotiation Handout

    This is a handout that you may find useful when using SimpleNS. All the main steps and actions you will need are explained here. If you need any further help, please send us an email (invite@jmsb.concordia.ca); you can do so directly from every SimpleNS page.

    1. Introduction

    Participants in the negotiation are paired randomly and anonymously. Your partner may be from your city, country or from far away: a different country, a different continent. Please log in at least once every two days to check whether there has been any progress with your negotiation.

    In brief, the negotiation involves a preparation step during which you read the case information. You then proceed to an offer exchange setting using a simple messaging system during which you try to reach an agreement.

    Negotiations have a deadline. Remember to complete your negotiation by the deadline. After that you cannot continue to negotiate and you are only able to conduct some post-negotiation activities (e.g. review your negotiation transcript, give your comments or feedback).

    Also, please note that in addition to the negotiation, online questionnaires may be added during this process for improving the system as well as research purposes, In particular, the pre-questionnaire(s) may be given before the actual negotiation phase (i.e. offer/message exchange), and the post-questionnaire(s) will be included in the post-negotiation activities. Please fill out the questionnaires carefully. This is important for us to provide better systems and services for your negotiations.

    2. Getting started

    Log in to the system at:  http://invite.concordia.ca/simplens

    When a user logs into the SimpleNS system, a "welcome page" will appear. The page consists of an introduction, key information and the negotiation status, which you can check at any time during the negotiation by clicking the tabs on the top. The user can click on the "continue" button at the bottom to proceed the negotiation preparation phase.

    At every step, the user can choose "Refresh" from the control bar on the right-hand side to obtain the latest information regarding your negotiation status, select "Log out" to exit the system or "End negotiation" to terminate the negotiation.

    3. Using SimpleNS©

    1. The next page that appears will introduce the public information for the negotiation, which is available for both parties. Click the "private information" to view the private information for the role played by the user. Respective different private information will be given to both negotiating parties

    2. When the user begins to negotiate, he/she can write an offer or/and message using the offer box and message box provided in the "Send message/offer" page. Click on the "Submit" button to send out the offer or/and message.

    3. When an offer or/and message is sent out, the counterpart will receive an email informing him/her the offer or/and message. A "Read message/offer" page will display the message/offer sent by the user. He/she can click on the "Agreement" button to agree with the user or click on the "Send message/offer" button to make a counter-offer from the negotiation bar on the right side.

    4. When an agreement is reached, a "View agreement" page will display the history of the negotiation.

    5. No matter whether an agreement is reached or not, the user can end the negotiation by clicking on the "End negotiation" button. When he/she clicks on this button, a warning window will pop up for the user to confirm this action. Click on the "Confirm" button and the negotiation will be ended and a "Terminate" page will appear, informing the user that the negotiation has been ended. After this point, user can no longer contact his/her counterpart.

    6.
